Massive Resignations Rock Trinamool Congress
Kolkata: The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) is facing a major internal crisis after more than 100 councillors reportedly resigned from the party across several municipalities in West Bengal. The mass exits have triggered intense political speculation and exposed growing unrest within the ruling party’s organisational structure.
The resignations have been reported from municipalities including Bhatpara, Halisahar, Kanchrapara, Garulia, North Barrackpore, Contai, and Diamond Harbour. In several civic bodies, the sudden exits have raised fears of administrative instability and collapse of municipal boards.
Trouble Even in TMC Strongholds
The developments are being viewed as politically significant as some resignations reportedly came from areas considered strongholds of senior TMC leadership. Diamond Harbour, associated with Abhishek Banerjee’s political influence, has also witnessed councillor exits, intensifying concerns within the party.
Political observers believe the crisis reflects growing dissatisfaction among grassroots leaders after the party’s electoral setback and ongoing internal factionalism.
Reasons Behind the Revolt
Sources indicate that several councillors are unhappy over lack of organisational authority, local leadership disputes, and allegations of corruption involving civic administrations. Reports of internal infighting and dissatisfaction over ticket distribution and political sidelining have further widened cracks inside the party.
The continuing unrest has fuelled speculation that more local leaders could distance themselves from the TMC in the coming weeks.
BJP’s Explosive Claim on TMC Exodus
Amid the turmoil, BJP MP Saumitra Khan made sensational claims regarding the condition of the Trinamool Congress. He alleged that nearly 50 TMC MLAs and 20 MPs are unhappy and ready to join the BJP once approval comes from the party’s central leadership.
“If the BJP central leadership says it once, TMC will not remain a party anymore,” Khan claimed, asserting that many Trinamool leaders are already in contact with the BJP.
His remarks have sparked fresh political debate over possible defections and the future stability of the Mamata Banerjee-led party.
TMC Rejects BJP’s Allegations
Reacting strongly to the BJP leader’s claims, TMC MP Sougata Roy dismissed the allegations as baseless and accused the BJP of spreading misinformation to create confusion within the party ranks.
“This is completely false. Saumitra Khan and the BJP are spreading misinformation,” Roy said while rejecting reports of any large-scale rebellion inside the Trinamool Congress.
