Ranchi: Ranchi scripted a new chapter in Indian football history on Sunday as the city hosted its first-ever IndianOil Durand Cup match, with a colourful opening ceremony, patriotic fervour and an enthusiastic turnout of football lovers at the Birsa Munda Football Stadium in Morabadi. The tournament’s arrival marks the first time in the 138-year history of the Durand Cup that Ranchi has been included as a host city.
The 135th edition of Asia’s oldest football tournament is being played across multiple venues in five states from July 25 to August 23, featuring 24 teams, including two international clubs. Ranchi is hosting seven matches, including league-stage fixtures and one quarter-final, reflecting Jharkhand’s growing stature on India’s sporting map.

The Ranchi leg of the tournament began with a vibrant opening ceremony showcasing Jharkhand’s rich tribal culture through traditional dance and music performances. This year’s edition is being hosted across Kolkata, Jamshedpur, Ranchi, Shillong, Kokrajhar and Imphal, with the final scheduled for August 23.
