Bokaro: A fire broke out at the Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) on Thursday morning, damaging two conveyor belts in the slag granulation section of Blast Furnace No. 1.

According to sources, the fire erupted around 9.30 am on conveyor belts K-21 and K-22, which are used to transport slag (Hot). The plant’s fire wing was immediately alerted, and firefighters rushed to the spot to bring the blaze under control after a strenuous operation.

The fire may have been triggered by contact with hot slag, although the exact cause has not yet been established, sources said. The plant management has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the incident and assess the extent of the damage.

Officials said the fire remained confined to the conveyor belt area outside the main blast furnace and did not affect the plant’s major production units. Both conveyor belts sustained damage in the incident.

The prompt response by the plant’s fire and safety teams helped prevent the flames from spreading to nearby equipment and operational areas. The incident also triggered precautionary measures in the affected section as personnel worked to secure the area and prevent any recurrence.

Sources said a detailed assessment of the conveyor belts and associated equipment is being carried out to determine the repair requirements and the likely impact on slag-handling operations. Maintenance teams are expected to take necessary corrective measures after the inspection.

The financial loss is yet to be assessed, officials said, adding that the extent of the damage would be determined after the management completes its detailed inspection and investigation.
