Home Minister predicts another BJP victory, challenges Akhilesh Yadav and Rahul Gandhi; promises Uniform Civil Code if party returns to power

Lucknow: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has made an ambitious political prediction, declaring that the BJP will continue to rule Uttar Pradesh for the next 30 years. Sounding the poll bugle for the 2027 Assembly elections, Shah expressed confidence that the party would secure a third consecutive victory in the politically crucial state.

Addressing the BJP’s Uttar Pradesh State Working Committee meeting in Lucknow on Friday, Shah urged party leaders and workers to put aside internal differences, strengthen the organisation and prepare for another electoral battle.

Describing the BJP government’s position in the state as firmly established, Shah said, “The BJP government in Uttar Pradesh is like Angad’s foot. Nobody can move it. The BJP is going to form the government again. There should be no doubt about it.”

Taking a direct swipe at Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav, Shah asserted that the SP would not return to power in Uttar Pradesh for the next three decades. He also challenged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav, expressing confidence that the BJP would continue to dominate the state’s political landscape.

2027 elections: BJP sounds campaign bugle

Shah’s address was largely focused on the BJP’s preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections. Invoking Arjuna’s concentration on his target in the Mahabharata, he asked party workers to remain focused on securing another decisive mandate.

Recalling the party’s electoral journey, Shah highlighted its landslide victory in 2017, when it won 312 of the 403 Assembly seats, followed by another victory in 2022 with 255 seats. He emphasised that the BJP’s organisational strength and dedicated grassroots workers remained its biggest political assets.

However, the road to another victory may not be easy. The 2024 Lok Sabha elections exposed vulnerabilities in the BJP’s electoral position. The party won only 33 of Uttar Pradesh’s 80 parliamentary seats, while the Samajwadi Party emerged as the biggest winner with 37 seats.

The results demonstrated that the opposition could challenge the BJP’s dominance by consolidating its support base.

UCC promise adds a new political dimension

One of the major political announcements in Shah’s address was the BJP’s commitment to implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttar Pradesh if it returns to power.

Shah declared that the next BJP government would implement the UCC, making it clear that the issue would remain an important part of the party’s political agenda.

The proposed code seeks to establish a common framework of civil laws governing personal matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption, irrespective of religious affiliation.

The announcement indicates that the BJP may place the UCC alongside Hindutva, governance, development and law and order as key themes of its 2027 election campaign.

Ayodhya firing and opposition under attack

Shah also invoked the politically sensitive October 30, 1990, police firing on kar sevaks in Ayodhya during the tenure of then Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Targeting Akhilesh Yadav, he questioned the Samajwadi Party’s political legacy and contrasted the firing incident with the BJP’s role in the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya.

He also attacked the Congress and the Samajwadi Party over their allegations of electoral irregularities and vote theft. Comparing the opposition’s complaints to a losing team blaming the umpire, Shah challenged Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav to discuss the issue in Parliament.

BJP faces the challenge of retaining its political dominance

Despite Shah’s confidence, the BJP faces several challenges ahead of the 2027 elections. The setback in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, opposition consolidation and organisational differences have underlined the need for the party to reassess its political strategy.

For the Samajwadi Party, the challenge will be to maintain its expanded support base and translate its parliamentary gains into an Assembly victory. The Congress, meanwhile, will seek to strengthen its position through its alliance with the SP.

For the BJP, retaining public confidence in the Yogi Adityanath government’s performance, maintaining organisational unity and addressing local electoral concerns will be crucial.

Shah’s declaration of a 30-year BJP rule is undoubtedly a powerful political message intended to energise party cadres and unsettle the opposition. But the ultimate verdict will be delivered by Uttar Pradesh’s electorate in 2027.
