New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs has appointed Dinesh Trivedi as India’s next High Commissioner to Bangladesh, marking a significant diplomatic assignment for the veteran parliamentarian.
Trivedi, a seasoned political figure, has previously served as Union Minister for Railways and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare in the government led by Manmohan Singh. He has also represented West Bengal in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Barrackpore constituency from 2009 to 2019, after earlier serving multiple terms in the Upper House.
A recipient of the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award (2016–17), Trivedi has chaired several key parliamentary forums, including the Indo-European Union Parliamentary Forum.
He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2021 after resigning from the All India Trinamool Congress.
His appointment comes at a crucial time, with India-Bangladesh ties continuing to hold strategic importance in the region.
