New Delhi: The Election Commission of India will conduct the election for a new Vice President within a month, following the unexpected resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar. The poll body confirmed on Wednesday that preparations for the Vice-Presidential Election 2025 are underway and the official schedule will be announced soon.
“The Election Commission has initiated necessary arrangements. The poll date will be declared once preparations are complete,” the Commission said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs has formally communicated Dhankhar’s resignation to the Rajya Sabha. As per the MHA notification dated July 22, 2025, the resignation, submitted under Article 67(a) of the Constitution, takes effect immediately.
Dhankhar’s abrupt departure, just a day after the Monsoon Session of Parliament began, has stirred political circles. His exit also vacates the post of Rajya Sabha Chairman, which is currently being handled by Vice Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh.
Presiding over the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, MP Ghanshyam Tiwari informed members about the MHA’s notification during Question Hour.
The sudden nature and timing of the resignation have raised eyebrows within the Opposition, though no official explanation has been offered. With the Vice-President’s office now vacant, the stage is set for a new election in the coming weeks.
