Kolkata: In a decisive move to tighten electoral discipline, the Election Commission of India has directed the immediate withdrawal of state-provided security cover for politicians and individuals facing criminal charges across West Bengal.
The directive, sent to District Magistrates and senior police officials, mandates a swift review of all beneficiaries of government security. Those with pending criminal cases—especially serious or non-bailable offences—have been deemed ineligible for such protection.

Zero Tolerance for Misuse
Officials indicated that the move is aimed at curbing the alleged misuse of state security personnel, which in certain instances was reportedly being leveraged to influence or intimidate voters. The Commission has stressed that security cover must strictly be based on genuine threat perception—not political privilege.
Strict Deadlines, Immediate Action
Authorities at the district level have been instructed to:
- Prepare a detailed list of all individuals currently enjoying security cover, including their designation and location
- Submit constituency-wise and police district-wise reports without delay
- Reassess threat levels and revoke protection where unjustified
In a parallel crackdown, the Commission has also ordered police to arrest individuals facing non-bailable charges within 10 days, signaling a broader push to restore law and order during the election period.
Statewide Review Triggered by Violence
The action follows recent incidents of violence in districts like Malda, which raised alarm over the deteriorating security environment. The EC has sought a comprehensive report from the State Police Nodal Officer by the same day, underlining the urgency of the situation.
Message Ahead of Elections
The latest directive reinforces the Commission’s stance on ensuring free, fair, and intimidation-free elections. By stripping security privileges from those under legal scrutiny, the EC aims to dismantle any perception of state-backed protection for accused individuals during the poll process.
The administration has been told in clear terms: compliance must be immediate, and accountability will be closely monitored.
