New Delhi/Kolkata/Ranchi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday stepped up its probe against Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Nadimul Haque, conducting searches at seven locations across Kolkata, Delhi and Ranchi in connection with an alleged money-laundering case linked to Urdu daily Akhbar-E-Mashriq.
The ED’s Kolkata zonal office carried out searches at premises linked to Haque, including his residence and locations associated with the newspaper. Haque is reportedly a director of Akhbar-E-Mashriq Pvt. Ltd., which publishes the Urdu daily.

Probe linked to financial transactions
According to officials, the ED registered an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) on the basis of an FIR filed by the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate in West Bengal. The case involves allegations concerning the publication and dissemination of material allegedly promoting communal disharmony, along with alleged illegal transactions, unaccounted cash dealings and funding from suspicious sources.
The agency is examining financial records and other documentary and digital evidence to trace the alleged proceeds of crime and establish the money trail. The investigation is being conducted under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
Searches across three states
The simultaneous operation covered addresses in Kolkata in West Bengal, Delhi and Ranchi in Jharkhand. Reports said the searches began early Monday and were being conducted with assistance from security and state police personnel.
In Delhi, an address linked to Haque at South Avenue was also searched. Reports identified the premises as being associated with the TMC leader and the party’s Delhi office.
The ED action marks a significant escalation in the agency’s investigation into the financial affairs surrounding Akhbar-E-Mashriq. Officials are yet to disclose details of any documents, cash or other material seized during the searches, and the probe remains underway.
