Eight dead after fire breaks out at Covid-19 hospital in Ahmedabad

JNS:  At least eight patients have died after a fire broke out at a COVID-19 hospital in Ahmedabad in the wee hours on Thursday. The cause of the fire is yet to be not known, police said.

According to the sources, the fire broke out at the Shrey Hospital in Navrangpura area of Ahmedabad during the early hours today; eight COVID patients include five men and three women have died in the incident.

“The fire broke out at around 3:30 am in the ICU department of Shrey Hospital; many patients were also rescued while eight died in the incident. The bodies are being sent for post mortem,” said LB Zala, assistant commissioner of police, Ahmedabad city.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has ordered an inquiry into the fire incident, it said in an official statement from the CM Office. The chief minister also declared a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the kin of the deceased. The CM has also announced financial aid of Rs 50,000 to the injured patients, it said.

PM also talked with Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Ahmedabad Mayor Bijal Patel about the situation, adding that the administration is providing all possible assistance to those affected.
