Jammu: Farooq Abdullah and Surinder Choudhary escaped unhurt after a gunman attempted to attack them outside a marriage hall in Jammu on Wednesday night, officials said.

The incident occurred in the upscale Greater Kailash locality when the leaders were leaving a wedding function they had attended to congratulate party leader B.S. Chouhan on his son’s marriage.

According to officials, the accused — identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, a resident of Purani Mandi and reportedly in his seventies — had been waiting outside the venue. He allegedly attempted to open fire at Abdullah as the leaders were stepping out.

Security personnel on duty quickly intervened. Two police officers, an inspector and a sub-inspector, overpowered the suspect, though he managed to fire a single shot before being disarmed.

No one was injured in the incident. The accused was immediately taken into custody and whisked away for questioning.

Preliminary reports indicate that the man was allegedly in an intoxicated condition at the time of the incident. Security agencies are investigating the motive behind the attempted attack.
