Fasting, Faith & Forever Bonds: Vat Savitri Puja Shines Across India

News Desk: Married Hindu women today observed Vat Savitri Puja with deep religious devotion and cultural fervor on the new moon day of Jyeshtha (Jeth). The auspicious occasion witnessed vibrant gatherings under banyan trees, where women dressed in new clothes and traditional ornaments performed sacred rituals, praying for the long life and well-being of their husbands.

On the occasion, devotee Pushpa Shri Vastav shared that women offered prayers beneath the sacred banyan tree, tied red threads around its trunk, and observed a strict Nirjala fast—abstaining from both food and water—to seek marital harmony, family unity, and prosperity.

The rituals were conducted under the guidance of Brahmin priests, who narrated the legend of Savitri and Satyavan, a timeless tale from Hindu scriptures. According to the tradition, Savitri’s unwavering devotion moved Yama, the god of death, to restore her husband Satyavan’s life, setting a powerful example of love and fidelity.

Religious scholars note that Vat Savitri Puja has been observed since the Yuga era, believed to protect marital bonds and bring health, happiness, and prosperity to the family. Temples and community centers across the region saw enthusiastic participation, highlighting the cultural and spiritual importance of this age-old tradition in contemporary society.

Explaining further, Pandit Mukesh Kumar said that Savitri Vrata—also known as Savitri Amavasya or Savitri Brata—is especially popular among married Hindu women in Odisha, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Nepal. In contrast, states like Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, and Karnataka observe the festival on Vat Purnima, the full moon day of the same month.

The observance honors Savitri, the legendary princess from the Mahabharata, whose unshakable devotion and courage restored her husband’s life. Her story remains a symbol of marital loyalty, strength, and spiritual resilience, continuing to inspire generations of women.
