New Delhi: India has witnessed a renewed surge in COVID-19 cases, with the active case count crossing the 6,000-mark, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) on Sunday. A total of 378 new infections were reported in the last 24 hours, pushing the active case tally to 6,133.
Kerala remains the epicentre of the current rise, contributing the largest share of new cases. It reported 144 fresh infections, followed by Gujarat with 105, West Bengal with 71, Rajasthan 24, and Delhi 21.
The report also noted that 753 patients recovered or were discharged during the same 24-hour period, offering some relief amid the uptick. However, the virus also claimed six lives, with fatalities reported in Karnataka (2), Kerala (3), and Tamil Nadu (1).
In Karnataka, the deceased included a 4-year-old child with pre-existing heart and lung conditions and a 78-year-old male with Ischemic Heart Disease and other co-morbidities. In Kerala, the three deaths involved patients aged 51, 64, and 92 years, all of whom had serious underlying illnesses like chronic kidney disease, cancer, and diabetes. The lone death in Tamil Nadu was a 42-year-old male suffering from uncontrolled diabetes and acute kidney disease.
Kerala currently tops the country with 1,950 active cases, making up the highest proportion of India’s total active COVID-19 caseload.
Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely as concerns over regional flare-ups grow, especially with monsoon-related illnesses potentially compounding the strain on the healthcare system.
