Ranchi: Jharkhand’s ongoing recruitment drive for nearly 26,000 government school teachers has thrown up an unusual situation, with some newly appointed teachers retiring immediately after receiving their appointment letters.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren distributed appointment letters to over 1,000 teachers in Ranchi on Monday. However, among the beneficiaries were teachers who either retired the very next day or had already crossed the retirement age of 60 years before receiving their appointments.

The anomaly stems from the recruitment process initiated in 2023, under which 50% of the vacancies were reserved for Para Teachers. Since Para Teachers could apply up to the age of 58, many candidates who applied at 57–58 have now reached the retirement age by the time the recruitment process concluded.

One such teacher, Nandlal Ravani of Jamtara, received his appointment letter on June 29 and retired the following day after turning 60. Another teacher, Md. Neyum Ansari from Palamu, had already retired on May 31 before receiving his appointment letter. He said he would preserve the appointment letter as a memento.
The rare cases have sparked discussion over the prolonged recruitment process and its impact on eligible candidates.
