Mumbai: Jio Platforms Limited (JPL), the telecom and digital services arm of Reliance Industries, made a blockbuster debut on the Indian stock market on Wednesday, with its shares listing at ₹1,358 apiece, a premium of 21.36% over the issue price of ₹1,119. The strong opening rewarded IPO allottees with substantial listing gains and marked a landmark moment for the Reliance Group.

The listing ceremony was attended by Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani, his wife Nita Ambani, and their children Akash, Isha and Anant Ambani. The occasion marked the entry of one of India’s largest digital businesses into the public markets.

The ₹30,213-crore IPO valued Jio Platforms at approximately ₹12.5 lakh crore at listing, making it India’s second-most valuable listed company after its parent, Reliance Industries, and the country’s most valuable telecom company by market capitalisation.

Anant Ambani calls listing a moment of gratitude

Anant Ambani, executive director of Reliance Industries, was among the prominent members of the Ambani family present at the ceremony. He described the occasion as a moment of gratitude and highlighted the significance of bringing Jio’s journey to the public markets.

He acknowledged the legacy of his grandfather, Dhirubhai Ambani, and the leadership of his father, Mukesh Ambani, in building the Reliance Group. He also recognised the contribution of his sister Isha Ambani and the wider Jio workforce in developing the company’s digital ecosystem.

With a subscriber base of approximately 530 million, Jio has emerged as a major force in India’s telecommunications industry. Its expansion into digital services has helped transform the way millions of Indians access mobile connectivity and online platforms.

₹30,213-crore IPO draws massive investor demand

Jio Platforms’ public issue, which opened on October 21 and closed on October 23, received an overwhelming response from investors. The IPO was subscribed 22.19 times overall, reflecting strong demand, particularly from institutional investors.

Qualified institutional buyers led the subscription, bidding 70.55 times the shares reserved for their category. The non-institutional investor segment was subscribed approximately 14 times, while the retail investor portion received bids for 2.72 times its allotted quota.

The issue was priced in the range of ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share, with the final price fixed at the upper end of the band. The strong subscription indicated substantial investor interest in Jio’s market position and future growth prospects.

Jio emerges as India’s most valuable telecom company

At its listing price of ₹1,358, Jio Platforms commanded a market capitalisation of approximately ₹12.5 lakh crore, placing it ahead of telecom rival Bharti Airtel in market value at the time of listing.

The debut also underscored the growing importance of telecommunications and digital services within India’s corporate landscape. Jio’s scale, nationwide connectivity network and expanding digital ecosystem have made it a central part of Reliance Industries’ strategy to diversify beyond its traditional energy and petrochemicals businesses.

The listing gives public-market investors an opportunity to participate directly in the performance of Reliance’s digital and telecom operations.

Growth opportunities beyond mobile connectivity

Jio Platforms’ future growth will depend on its ability to increase revenue from its extensive subscriber base while expanding into newer areas, including home broadband, enterprise connectivity, cloud services and artificial intelligence.

The company also faces challenges, including intense competition, the high cost of network expansion, regulatory requirements and the need to sustain profitability while investing in new technologies.

Investors will closely watch whether Jio can translate its enormous customer base into higher average revenue per user and stronger long-term earnings.

A new chapter for Reliance’s digital business

Jio Platforms’ blockbuster listing marks a significant milestone in the evolution of the Reliance Group. The strong debut reflects investor confidence in the company’s scale, market position and digital growth opportunities.

For investors who received shares in the IPO, the listing premium offered an immediate notional gain. However, the stock’s future performance will depend on business results, earnings growth, competition and broader market conditions.

The listing ceremony, attended by the Ambani family, marked the beginning of a new phase for Jio as a publicly traded company, with expectations running high for its role in India’s rapidly expanding digital economy.
