Kolkata: Mamata Banerjee officially ceased to be the Chief Minister of West Bengal on Wednesday after Governor R. N. Ravi dissolved the State Legislative Assembly, formally ending the 15-year rule of the All India Trinamool Congress.
The move came after the completion of the outgoing government’s tenure and days after the Bharatiya Janata Party stormed to power with a massive mandate in the recently concluded Assembly elections.
Governor Issues Dissolution Order
An official notification published in the Kolkata Gazette stated that the Assembly stood dissolved with effect from May 7, 2026.
Invoking powers under Article 174(2)(b) of the Constitution, the Governor issued the formal order ending the tenure of the outgoing House and the Banerjee-led cabinet.
The notification from Lok Bhavan said the Governor had exercised constitutional authority to dissolve the Assembly, clearing the way for the formation of a new government in the state.

BJP Scripts Historic Bengal Victory
The BJP delivered its biggest-ever electoral breakthrough in Bengal, winning 207 seats and dislodging the TMC from power for the first time since 2011.
The result marked a dramatic political shift in the state, with the TMC reduced to 80 seats after over a decade of uninterrupted rule under Mamata Banerjee.
The sweeping mandate handed the BJP its maiden opportunity to form a government in Bengal, significantly reshaping the state’s political landscape.

Mamata Refused to Step Down
Before the dissolution, Mamata Banerjee had asserted that she would not resign despite the electoral setback, alleging that the verdict was influenced by a “conspiracy.”
“There is no question of me resigning. We were defeated not by public mandate but by conspiracy,” Banerjee had said earlier while addressing the media.
Her remarks triggered sharp political reactions and intensified post-election tensions across the state.
Constitutional Path Cleared for New Government
With the dissolution now in effect, the constitutional process for government formation has formally begun in West Bengal.
The Governor’s order effectively terminated the tenure of the outgoing administration and paved the way for the BJP-led government to assume office in the coming days.
