Kishtwar, J&K: A massive cloudburst struck Chasoti, a remote village in Kishtwar district, on Wednesday afternoon, leaving several dead, over 75 injured, and many missing. The disaster triggered flash floods, causing widespread destruction to homes and property, and severely affecting a ‘langar’ set up for devotees participating in the ongoing Machail Mata Yatra.
Located around 90 kilometres from Kishtwar, Chasoti is the last motorable point on the pilgrimage route before the 8.5-kilometre trek to the Machail Mata Shrine. At the time of the tragedy, a large gathering of pilgrims was present in the area. Authorities have since suspended the yatra and mobilised extensive rescue and relief efforts.
Following the incident, the district administration swiftly deployed rescue teams, while two units of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were dispatched from Udhampur. Officials estimate that complete rescue, relief, and recovery operations could take up to 20 days due to challenging terrain and weather conditions.
President Droupadi Murmu expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, offering condolences to bereaved families and prayers for the ongoing rescue efforts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed his sympathies, assuring that “every possible assistance” will be extended to those affected.
Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, confirming that the Centre is closely monitoring the situation. “NDRF teams have been rushed, and all necessary support will be provided,” he said in a social media post.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh, coordinating with central authorities, confirmed that both State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and NDRF units are in action, though access remains difficult due to the rugged terrain and inclement weather. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Omar Abdullah also expressed grief and pledged full-scale rescue and rehabilitation efforts for the victims.
