New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping have offered to assist efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Kremlin said on Sunday, in a significant diplomatic development on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said both Modi and Xi showed keen interest in efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict during their separate meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and offered their “good offices” to help find a settlement.
Putin welcomed the initiative and briefed both leaders on Moscow’s assessment of the conflict, Peskov said, according to Sputnik.

Modi stresses dialogue and diplomacy
During his meeting with Putin on Friday, Modi reiterated India’s position that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable path to resolving conflicts.
The Prime Minister also conveyed India’s readiness to contribute to peace efforts and support initiatives aimed at ending conflicts through negotiations.
The remarks come amid renewed fighting between Russia and Ukraine and fresh international efforts to bring the two sides back to the negotiating table.
West Asia and Black Sea also discussed
According to an Indian government statement, Modi and Putin also discussed major regional and global developments, including the conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region.
The instability in the Black Sea has broader implications for maritime trade and the safety of Indian seafarers, making developments in the region a matter of direct concern for New Delhi.
Fresh diplomatic push
The Modi-Putin meeting came days after US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner travelled to Moscow and Kyiv as part of renewed efforts to revive negotiations and explore a possible pathway towards ending the war.
However, despite the latest diplomatic activity, fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces has continued.
The Kremlin’s disclosure that both Modi and Xi are willing to help bridge the divide adds a new diplomatic dimension to the search for a settlement—and places India and China among the major powers being viewed as potential interlocutors in efforts to end the conflict.
