J&K: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the highly anticipated Sonamarg Tunnel (Z-Morh tunnel) in the Ganderbal district of Central Kashmir, marking a significant milestone in the region’s infrastructure development.
The tunnel, which is set to transform travel in the area, was dedicated to the nation in the presence of Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, senior government officials, and members of Parliament.
During the event, PM Modi inspected the tunnel and was briefed on the details of the project by officials. The Sonamarg Tunnel is expected to drastically reduce travel time, cutting it down to just 20-25 minutes between Gagangeer and Sonamarg in Ganderbal district.
The tunnel, a technological marvel, is designed with state-of-the-art systems that offer real-time updates and enhanced connectivity for users, setting a new benchmark for road infrastructure in the region.
Work on the tunnel project began in May 2015 and was completed in 2024. With its inauguration, the tunnel promises to significantly improve connectivity between Sonamarg and Gagangeer, facilitating seamless access to the Ladakh region year-round. This development is expected to boost the region’s trade and tourism sectors, drawing both domestic and international visitors.
Additionally, the Sonamarg Tunnel will play a key role in the socio-economic growth of nearby areas, including Kargil and Leh districts, and will complement the ongoing construction of the Zojila Tunnel, further enhancing accessibility and development in the region.
