Ranchi Sees First COVID Case This Year; Govt Urges Caution

Ranchi: The first confirmed case of COVID-19 in 2025 has been reported in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand.

Lal Vijay Shahdev, a prominent film critic and member of the Jharkhand Film Development Corporation Limited, has tested positive for the virus.

Shahdev announced his diagnosis through a social media post on Sunday, stating, “As of yesterday, 257 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in India — I am now among them. On May 22, while returning from Mumbai to Ranchi, I felt unwell mid-flight and lost consciousness.”

His disclosure has brought renewed attention to the resurgence of COVID-19 cases in the country, although officials have urged the public to remain calm.

Health Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari addressed the situation, calling it “normal” and stating that there is no cause for alarm. “There is no need to panic. The Health Department is closely monitoring the situation,” he said, adding that precautionary measures such as wearing masks in crowded areas should be followed diligently.

“Masks don’t just protect against COVID-19, but also from other viral and bacterial infections,” Dr. Ansari emphasized. He urged the public to stay vigilant, maintain hygiene, and take personal responsibility for preventing the spread of the virus.

The Jharkhand government, according to Dr. Ansari, is awaiting updated guidelines from the central government. Immediate action will be taken once those are received, he assured.

Authorities also appealed to citizens to avoid spreading or believing in rumors, rely only on verified information, and follow safety advisories issued by health officials.

With the first 2025 case now confirmed, the state government has stepped up its readiness, reinforcing its commitment to ensure public safety in the face of evolving health threats.
