Imphal, Manipur – Tensions flared in Imphal on Saturday night after security forces arrested Kanan Singh, a prominent leader of Arambai Tenggol (AT) — a controversial Meitei volunteer group accused of involvement in the ongoing ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities.
The arrest sparked violent street protests with shocking visuals surfacing of young men dousing themselves in petrol and threatening self-immolation. Protesters also burned tyres, blocked roads, and some residents reported hearing gunshots amid the chaos.
In a viral video from the protests, a young man in a black t-shirt holding a petrol bottle can be heard saying:
“We have given up arms. We helped during the floods. Now you’re arresting us? We will kill ourselves.“
Who is Kanan Singh?
Kanan Singh is the prime suspect in the February 2024 attack on the home of Additional SP Moirangthem Amit and his subsequent abduction. At that time, Singh was serving as a head constable in Manipur Police’s commando unit but was later suspended for dereliction of duty. He subsequently joined Arambai Tenggol, which has been under scrutiny for its alleged role in the state’s ethnic conflict.
Government Response: Curfew and Internet Shutdown
Following the unrest, the administration imposed a curfew and ordered a five-day internet suspension in five sensitive districts: Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, and Kakching. Authorities say the measures are necessary to prevent escalation and restore law and order.

AT came into prominence earlier this year during the ethnic clashes. In February, the group reportedly surrendered arms following orders under President’s Rule, as Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey directed all illegal weapons to be returned for ensuring peace in border areas.
More recently, AT members were seen actively involved in flood relief operations in the valley, gaining local support in Meitei-dominated regions.
However, the group continues to face serious scrutiny, with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) probing multiple cases, including one against AT chief Korounganba Khuman.
