US Embassy Clarifies ‘Sustainment Only’ Contract with Pakistan
New Delhi: The US Embassy in India has dismissed reports claiming that Washington is supplying advanced air-to-air missiles to Pakistan, clarifying that the recent contract in question involves only “sustainment and spares” for existing systems, not any weapons upgrade.
In a statement issued on Friday, the embassy called recent media claims “false and misleading,” asserting that “no part of the referenced contract modification is for the delivery of new Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs) to Pakistan.”
The clarification follows reports in several outlets suggesting that Pakistan was set to receive AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles from the United States — a development that, if true, could have enhanced Islamabad’s F-16 fleet and shifted the regional aerial balance.
However, the embassy said the reports stemmed from a misreading of a standard contract update published by the US Department of Defense on September 30, 2025, which listed modifications to a Foreign Military Sales agreement covering sustainment items for multiple countries.
“The sustainment does not include an upgrade to any of Pakistan’s current capabilities,” the statement emphasised, adding that such contract modifications are a routine part of US defense logistics, ensuring operational support and maintenance of systems already in service.
In a separate note, the embassy underlined that “recent narratives have overstated the intent and scope” of the contract and reaffirmed that the US position on regional stability remains unchanged.
The clarification comes amid heightened speculation about Washington’s defense ties with Islamabad, following recent diplomatic exchanges between the two nations. The embassy’s categorical denial appears aimed at quelling concerns in New Delhi over any perceived shift in US defense cooperation with Pakistan.
