Bokaro: In a swift crackdown on food safety violations, authorities sealed the canteen at Delhi Public School (DPS), Sector-04, Bokaro, following a surprise inspection that uncovered multiple lapses and irregularities.
The raid was carried out under the direction of Dr. Abhay Bhushan Prasad, who also serves as the Designated Officer and Civil Surgeon of Bokaro. The inspection team, led by Food Safety Officer Gulab Lakra, included police personnel and was conducted in the presence of Executive Magistrate Jaya Kumari.
Multiple Violations Unearthed
Officials said the action was triggered by a formal complaint received from the Food Safety Commissioner’s office in Namkum. During the inspection, the canteen was found to be in violation of key provisions under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and associated 2011 regulations.
Among the major violations flagged:
- The canteen lacked a valid FSSAI license or registration.
- No authorization from the school administration was available.
- Absence of pest control and staff medical fitness records.
- Poor hygiene conditions, with visible filth inside the premises.
- Food handlers were not using basic protective gear like gloves and head covers.
- Expired items, including packaged pickle and vegetarian mayonnaise, were found stocked.
Samples of turmeric powder, chilli powder, edible oil, and curd have been collected and sent for laboratory testing. Authorities indicated that further action will follow based on the results.
Canteen Sealed Amid Resistance
Officials also reported obstruction from school staff and management during the inspection. With support from local police and magistrate authorities, the team proceeded to seal the canteen on-site, pending further orders.
DPS Management Denies Responsibility
Responding to the action, the DPS Bokaro management distanced itself from the alleged violations, stating that the canteen operations are outsourced. The administration maintained that strict action would be taken if wrongdoing is established but alleged that the raid appeared “partially biased.”
The school also claimed procedural lapses during the operation, alleging that officials failed to provide a formal raid order and that management representatives were mistreated before the premises were sealed.
The incident has sparked concerns over food safety standards in school campuses, even as authorities signal stricter enforcement in the wake of rising complaints.
