Shimla/Mandi: In a landmark step towards modernizing India’s postal network, the Department of Posts has launched a drone-based mail and parcel delivery service in Himachal Pradesh, bringing faster connectivity to some of the state’s most inaccessible mountainous regions.
The service, inaugurated by Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, began operations on the Mandi–Rehardhar route, marking the first operational drone corridor under India Post’s ambitious plan to transform last-mile delivery in difficult terrains.
This is just the beginning.

From Two Hours to Just Seven Minutes
For residents of Rehardhar and nearby villages, what once required a journey of more than two hours through winding mountain roads can now be accomplished in just seven minutes. The drone service has dramatically reduced transit time between the Mandi Head Post Office and the Rehardhar Branch Post Office, highlighting the potential of unmanned aerial technology in public service delivery.
The successful launch follows a series of trials that demonstrated how drones can overcome geographical barriers that have long challenged postal operations in hill states.

Technology-Driven Postal Transformation
Announcing the initiative, Scindia said the project emerged from feedback received from Gramin Dak Sevaks and postal staff working in remote areas. The goal, he noted, is to leverage technology to strengthen postal services and ensure faster connectivity for rural communities.
The drone-based system is expected to improve efficiency, enhance reliability, and provide real-time tracking of mail and parcels. It also offers an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional transportation methods, particularly in regions where road access is limited.
Partnership with Private Sector
The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with drone logistics company Sky Air Mobility. The drones deployed under the project can carry payloads of up to 10 kilograms and cover distances of 30 to 50 kilometers in a single flight, making them well-suited for challenging mountain terrain.
Postal officials believe the technology could become a game-changer for remote villages where weather conditions and difficult roads often delay essential services.
Expansion Across India’s Difficult Terrains
Encouraged by the success of the Mandi pilot, the Department of Posts plans to expand drone-based mail transmission across nearly 150 identified routes in Himachal Pradesh and Assam over the coming months.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to integrate emerging technologies into public services and improve connectivity in geographically challenging regions. For thousands living in remote Himalayan settlements, the arrival of drone-powered postal delivery promises quicker communication, better access to services, and a new era of rural connectivity.
