New Delhi: In a significant boost to India’s maritime strength and indigenous defence capabilities, the Indian Navy is set to commission INS Mahendragiri (F38), the sixth stealth frigate under the ambitious Project 17A, at Visakhapatnam on July 11.
Designed entirely by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai, INS Mahendragiri is a symbol of India’s growing self-reliance in advanced warship construction. The frigate derives its name from the majestic Mahendragiri mountain range in the Eastern Ghats, reflecting the nation’s strength, resilience, and unwavering spirit.

Equipped with a state-of-the-art Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, the stealth frigate is capable of sustained high-speed operations while maintaining exceptional endurance across a wide range of maritime missions. With more than 75% indigenous content, the warship stands as a major achievement under the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the commissioning of INS Mahendragiri marks another major milestone in the successful execution of Project 17A, which aims to equip the Indian Navy with next-generation, technologically advanced stealth frigates capable of addressing emerging maritime security challenges.
Once inducted into service, INS Mahendragiri will significantly enhance the Navy’s operational capabilities and act as a powerful force multiplier in safeguarding India’s maritime interests. The warship is also expected to strengthen India’s strategic presence in the Indo-Pacific region, reinforcing the country’s role as the preferred security partner in the Indian Ocean Region.
The induction of INS Mahendragiri further underscores India’s steady progress towards defence self-reliance while enhancing the Navy’s ability to protect national interests across the vast maritime domain.
