AAP leader Sanjay Singh gets bail in Delhi excise policy case

New Delhi : The Supreme Court has granted bail to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, who was arrested in connection with the Delhi excise policy case.

A bench comprising Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice Dipankar Dutta, and Justice PB Varale granted bail to Singh after hearing the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which stated that it had no objection to the bail. The court clarified that while the trial would continue, the bail order should not be construed as commenting on the merits of the case.

The bench also ruled that Singh would be allowed to participate in political activities during the bail period, but he must refrain from making any public statements regarding the case. The court further specified that its decision should not be considered a precedent.

During the hearing, Singh’s counsel, Senior Advocate Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi, argued that no money had been recovered from his client, and there were exculpatory statements by approver Dinesh Arora.

The bench observed, “Nothing has been recovered, there is no trace of any money laundering.” It then directed the Additional Solicitor General SV Raju to determine whether further custody of Singh was necessary. If there were no instructions, the ASG could argue on merits, and the matter would be decided accordingly.

When the bench reconvened in the afternoon, ASG Raju informed the court that the ED had no objection to granting bail to Sanjay Singh, without delving into the merits of the case.

Sanjay Singh was arrested on October 4, 2023, following searches at his residence in Delhi. He is currently in judicial custody and was admitted to the hospital on health grounds.
