Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds Expected
Several coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy downpours possible at isolated places. Strong winds and thunderstorms could damage houses, electricity poles, communication networks, roads and standing crops.
Low-lying coastal settlements are particularly vulnerable to flooding and waterlogging. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, while maritime and fishing activities are likely to face disruption.
Port Authorities Issue Warnings
Precautionary measures have been intensified along the eastern coastline. Port authorities have been instructed to maintain warning signals in view of the approaching cyclone.
The IMD has also advised all ports in Odisha to keep Local Cautionary Signal No. III hoisted. Rain and thunderstorms are expected at many places along both north and south Odisha coasts.
Tamil Nadu Also Faces Cyclone Impact
The cyclone’s influence is already being felt in neighbouring Tamil Nadu, particularly in Chennai and surrounding districts. Heavy rainfall has caused waterlogging in several localities, disrupting normal life.
The IMD has issued an orange alert for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, Vellore and the Nilgiris. Schools and colleges in Chennai and Tiruvallur districts have been ordered to remain closed on Monday as a precaution.
Why Is It Named Murasu?
The name Murasu has a cultural connection with Tamil Nadu. Contributed by India to the regional list of cyclone names, Murasu means a traditional percussion instrument or drum in Tamil, also associated with the war drum.
Cyclones in the North Indian Ocean are named under the system maintained by the WMO/ESCAP Panel on Tropical Cyclones. The names are contributed by member countries to facilitate identification, communication and public warnings.
Authorities Step Up Preparedness
With the cyclone approaching the coast, disaster management authorities have intensified preparedness measures in vulnerable areas. Residents of low-lying coastal settlements have been advised to follow official warnings and cooperate with evacuation instructions.
The IMD is continuing to monitor the storm’s movement and intensity. Authorities have urged people not to believe rumours or rely on unverified information and to follow official weather updates.
The next few hours will be critical for coastal Andhra Pradesh as the state prepares for the impact of Murasu.
