Ashis Sinha I Bokaro: Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) intends to boost its renewable energy production capacity through floating solar and pumped storage projects.
Floating solar projects would be installed in all dams belonging to DVC, including Tilaya, Konar, Maithon, and Panchet (Bengal-Jharkhand) in Jharkhand with capacities of 50MW each, said an official.
“As per the Paris Agreement, new thermal power projects would not be erected, so we have decided to install solar power projects,” said RN Singh, Chairman DVC. “We are at work; floating solar projects would come up across our all dams. Solar units will also be installed on the surplus land in the thermal units as well as on the closed thermal units,” he added.
Singh was on a two-day visit to Chandrapura Thermal Power Station (CTPS) on Saturday. As a result of new policies, market-based changes that increase competition pose the greatest threat to low-cost electricity generation, he said. “However, competitive pressures have increased in recent years, despite DVC’s efforts to supply its consumers with excellent services and electricity at low prices,” said Singh.
But, based on the available technical expertise and resources, we are constantly striving to convert these challenges into opportunities, said Singh.
We have planned to increase our power generation capacity to 10,000 MW by the end of 2030. A 1500 MW (6×250) pump storage plant would also be proposed at Lugu Hills, informed Singh adding “A solar power unit will soon to come up at B plant unit of Bokaro Thermal Plant.”
