Guwahati: Senior BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday took oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term after the BJP-led NDA stormed back to power in the state with a massive mandate in the 2026 Assembly elections.
The swearing-in ceremony was held in Guwahati in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and several senior BJP and NDA leaders.
Sarma was unanimously elected leader of the BJP-led NDA legislature party following the alliance’s emphatic victory in the elections. Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya later invited him to form the government.

The BJP-led NDA retained power in Assam for a third straight term by winning more than 100 seats in the 126-member Assembly. The BJP alone secured 82 seats, comfortably crossing the majority mark on its own and reinforcing Sarma’s strong political hold over the state.
The Congress managed to win 19 seats, while NDA allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) secured 10 seats each. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) suffered a major setback, managing to win only two seats.
Several ministers also took oath alongside Sarma as part of the new cabinet formation, reflecting a mix of experienced leaders and alliance representatives.
Himanta Biswa Sarma had first assumed office as Assam Chief Minister in 2021 after leading the BJP to victory in the Assembly polls. Since then, he has emerged as one of the BJP’s most influential faces in the Northeast and has played a key role in expanding the party’s footprint across the region through the North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA).
A former Congress leader who joined the BJP in 2015, Sarma is widely regarded as the architect of the BJP’s rapid rise in the Northeast over the past decade.
The NDA’s sweeping victory in Assam is being seen as a significant political boost for the BJP ahead of upcoming electoral battles in the Northeast and across the country.
