IIT (ISM) celebrates World Environment Day

JNS: A host of events, including plantation of saplings, sit and draw competition, essay writing and poster presentation competition, marked the world environment day celebration at IIT-ISM, Dhanbad, during which a Monograph of Mission Life was also launched.

The day also witnessed an online interaction of the Honorable Education minister with the senior officials and faculty members of different Higher Educational Institutions, including IIT-ISM, informed Rajni Singh, Dean, Media & Branding of ISM.

The day-long activities began at the institute with the plantation drive carried out by faculty members, students and officials across the campus, during which they planted 270 saplings altogether.

Professor Dhiraj Kumar, Deputy Director of IIT-ISM and Professor MK Singh, Dean of Student Welfare, led the plantation drive at the institute.

A sit-and-draw competition was also organized during the day at the environment science engineering department, during which more than 50 kids of staff and faculty members of the institute took part.

The participants of the sit and draw competition were divided into four categories, including that student of Nursery to Std II (Topic-Save Trees Save Life), Std III to Std V (Topic-Save our environment), Std VI to Std VIII (Topic-Plastic Pollution-The Time to act is Now) and Std IX to Std XII (Topic- Solutions to Plastic Pollution).

Similarly, the essay writing competition participants were also divided into two categories, including Category 1 of Std VI to Std VIII (Topic-Beat Plastic Pollution), Choose a sustainable solution.

The participants of the poster presentation competition were also divided into two categories: Category 1 of UG and PG students and Category 2 for PhD research scholars.

Meanwhile, addressing the gathering of students, faculty members, staff and their kids as chief guests through video conferencing during the launching of the monograph of Mission Life, Sanjeev Kumar, Additional Principal Chief Conservators of Forests, CAMPA, said that it is high time that a concerted effort is initiated to improve the state of affairs.

Furnishing some statistics regarding the forest cover in Jharkhand, he said that the Forest Cover, which was 29 per cent about a decade ago, has increased to around 33 per cent.

He laid thrust on Forest Conservation efforts through community participation and said without the involvement of every stakeholder, the situation on the ground is not going to change.
