JNS: A Skill Development Centre (SDC) was established at IIT(ISM) Dhanbad to develop employable skills and gain meaningful employment.
We at IIT-ISM have identified the need to train Daily Wage Workers (DWW) at the Institute. Under the able guidance of Professor Rajiv Shekhar, Director, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, an SDC center has been established, informed Rajni Singh, Media Cell Chairperson, IIT ISM.
A committee comprising of Professor Alok Sinha, Professor Alok Kumar Das, Professor Sukanta Das, Dr. Koushik Mondal, Rakesh Soni, Pratik Kumar, Arbind Singh, and Rajan Choudhary was instrumental in setting up the SDC.
The centre is currently imparting training in trades such as Plumbing (48 registered DWW), Welding (12 participants), Machining (37 participants), Electrical skills (39 participants) and Computer Fundamentals (95 participants). The course is being run on Saturday and Sunday to facilitate the DWW attending the theory and practical classes.
The complete duration of each course is set to be 30 hours and the classes were started on 13 November. The emphasis is being given on training in the simplest language and providing hands-on training.
In the Mechanical trade, an MoU is also being signed with Indo Danish Tool Room to get their Instructors and certification for the said courses. The course will result in certification from IIT(ISM) Dhanbad and helping the candidates for employment in their respective fields, she said.
“The objective of this SDC is to develop skilled manpower who can earn their livelihood according to their capacity and capabilities and to contribute in economic growth of the Nation,” she added.
