New Delhi: India’s defence manufacturing sector has reached a historic milestone, with annual defence production touching an all-time high of ₹1.78 lakh crore in FY 2025-26, reflecting the country’s growing self-reliance in military equipment and technology.

Announcing the achievement, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the latest figure represents a 15.6% increase over the previous fiscal year’s production of ₹1.54 lakh crore. The surge is even more striking when compared to FY 2020-21, when defence production stood at just over ₹84,000 crore, marking a 110% jump in five years.

The minister also highlighted the long-term transformation of India’s defence sector, noting that indigenous defence production has nearly quadrupled from ₹4,746 crore in FY 2013-14 to current record levels.

According to Singh, the achievement reflects the combined efforts of the Department of Defence Production, public-sector defence units, private industry, startups, and other stakeholders working to strengthen the country’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.

He emphasized that the sustained rise in production underscores the rapid expansion of India’s defence industrial base. Backed by policy reforms, greater private-sector participation, increased innovation, and a growing export footprint, the sector is expected to maintain its upward momentum in the coming years.

The latest figures reinforce the government’s push for the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ vision, positioning India as an emerging global hub for defence manufacturing and exports.
