India Extends $200 Million Defence Credit Line to Angola for Military Modernisation

New Delhi: India has extended a $200 million defence credit line to Angola to support the modernisation of its armed forces, following high-level bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço in New Delhi.

The announcement was made during a joint press briefing after delegation-level discussions between the two leaders. Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s firm stance against terrorism and expressed gratitude to Angola for its support following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. He emphasized India’s commitment to taking decisive action against terrorism and appreciated Angola’s solidarity in the global fight against extremism.

Prime Minister Modi also congratulated Angola on assuming the presidency of the African Union, calling it a moment of shared pride, particularly as the African Union secured permanent G20 membership during India’s presidency.

Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (Economic Relations) Dammu Ravi confirmed that Angola plans to procure defence equipment from Indian public and private sector companies under the credit line. Talks are underway regarding specific procurements to be made.

In addition to defence cooperation, India and Angola signed multiple agreements in sectors such as agriculture, traditional medicine, and cultural exchange. Mr. Ravi highlighted that the bilateral talks also explored future avenues of strategic collaboration, building on the already robust ties between the two countries.

President Lourenço, on a three-day state visit, is scheduled to participate in a business event in New Delhi aimed at strengthening trade and investment ties.
