New Delhi: In a significant boost to India’s military logistics and operational readiness, the Indian Army on Friday launched the indigenously developed Xtreme Weather Grade (XWG) Diesel, a specialised fuel designed to keep combat and logistics vehicles operational in freezing temperatures and high-altitude battle zones such as Ladakh and Siachen Glacier.
Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth unveiled the advanced fuel in New Delhi. Jointly developed by the Indian Army and Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), the specialised diesel is expected to ensure uninterrupted mobility of tanks, troop carriers, logistics trucks and other military platforms operating in some of the world’s harshest terrains.
Engineered for High-Altitude Warfare
Unlike conventional diesel, which can thicken or gel in sub-zero temperatures, XWG Diesel has been specially formulated to retain its flow characteristics even in extreme cold. This enables easier engine starts, smoother vehicle performance and enhanced reliability during critical military operations.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the fuel will significantly improve the mobility, safety and operational availability of mechanised forces deployed in remote, snow-bound regions where harsh weather often poses major logistical challenges.

Boost to Operational Readiness
The new fuel is expected to reduce vehicle downtime, improve mission readiness and simplify logistics for troops stationed in difficult climatic conditions. Defence experts say dependable fuel performance is crucial for mechanised operations in mountainous terrain, where severe weather can otherwise hamper mobility and delay rapid response.
The specialised diesel will support a broad range of Army vehicles during both routine deployments and combat operations, strengthening the Armed Forces’ ability to sustain operations in extreme environments.

Developed under the Government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, XWG Diesel represents another step towards strengthening India’s indigenous defence capabilities and reducing dependence on imported technologies.
The Defence Ministry said the innovation not only enhances military preparedness but also has potential civilian applications in high-altitude and severe winter regions. Officials described the launch as a major milestone in modernising India’s military logistics infrastructure and improving the endurance of forces deployed along strategically important frontiers.
