New Delhi: In a significant boost to India’s maritime electronic warfare capabilities, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a ₹449-crore contract with Bengaluru-based Accord Software and Systems Pvt. Ltd. (ASSPL) for the procurement of 20 Enhanced Capability Global Navigation Satellite System (ECGNSS) Jammers for the Indian Navy.

The acquisition marks another major step in India’s drive towards defence self-reliance, with the contract being awarded under the Buy (Indian–IDDM) category—the highest priority category for indigenous defence procurement. The project mandates a minimum 75 percent indigenous content, reinforcing the government’s commitment to the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Advanced Electronic Warfare Capability

The ECGNSS jammers are designed to disrupt and deceive enemy satellite navigation systems, a capability that has become increasingly important in modern warfare. By interfering with Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals used for navigation, targeting, and timing, the systems can significantly hamper an adversary’s operational effectiveness.

These advanced jammers are capable of degrading signal acquisition and tracking while also carrying out sophisticated spoofing operations that can mislead hostile platforms relying on satellite-based navigation.

Strengthening Naval Operations

With maritime conflicts becoming increasingly technology-driven, the Indian Navy is investing heavily in electronic warfare systems that can provide an operational edge in contested environments. The new jammers will enable naval assets to operate more effectively in areas where satellite navigation signals are vulnerable to disruption or manipulation.

The systems are expected to enhance the Navy’s ability to protect critical maritime assets, counter emerging threats, and maintain operational superiority during high-intensity conflicts.

Indigenous Technology at the Core

The contract highlights the growing role of Indian defence technology companies in developing sophisticated military systems. Accord Software and Systems, known for its expertise in navigation and positioning technologies, will manufacture the jammers domestically, contributing to the expansion of India’s indigenous defence industrial base.

The project is also expected to generate employment opportunities and strengthen the country’s electronic warfare ecosystem by encouraging greater participation from domestic suppliers and technology partners.

Strategic Importance

The procurement comes at a time when militaries around the world are prioritising electronic warfare and spectrum dominance as key elements of modern combat. Satellite navigation systems have become integral to military operations, making the ability to disrupt or deceive such systems a critical strategic capability.

By inducting these advanced indigenous GNSS jammers, India is not only enhancing the operational readiness of the Indian Navy but also reinforcing its broader objective of building a technologically advanced and self-reliant defence force capable of addressing evolving security challenges across the Indo-Pacific region.

The ₹449-crore deal underscores New Delhi’s continued focus on modernising the armed forces with home-grown technologies while reducing dependence on foreign defence equipment.
