Mumbai: The Indian Navy is set to commission three indigenously built warships—Nilgiri, Surat, and Vaghsheer—on January 15 at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. This significant event highlights India’s strides in defense self-reliance and its growing capabilities in indigenous shipbuilding.
The commissioning of these advanced combat platforms will enhance the Navy’s operational readiness and capabilities, showcasing India’s commitment to strengthening its defense sector.
The warship Nilgiri is equipped with stealth features and cutting-edge technologies, while Surat brings substantial upgrades in design and operational capacity. Both vessels are equipped with modern aviation facilities, enabling them to operate a range of helicopters during both day and night missions.
Vaghsheer, a highly silent and versatile diesel-electric submarine, is designed for a variety of missions including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine operations, intelligence gathering, surveillance, and special operations. It is armed with wire-guided torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, and sophisticated sonar systems, enhancing the Navy’s strategic capabilities.
All three platforms were designed and built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai, underscoring India’s increasing self-reliance in defense manufacturing. The successful completion of these warships demonstrates rapid progress in warship design and construction, reinforcing India’s position as a leader in global defense manufacturing.
