Victoria (Seychelles): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday handed over an indigenously built fast patrol vessel to the Seychelles Coast Guard, marking a significant boost to bilateral defence cooperation and India’s growing role as a trusted maritime security partner in the Indian Ocean Region.

The patrol vessel, PS LESPWAR, built in India, is expected to strengthen Seychelles’ capability to monitor its vast maritime territory and conduct surveillance and patrol operations across its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The handover took place during Modi’s three-day official visit to the island nation.

Calling the transfer a major milestone in India-Seychelles ties, Prime Minister Modi said the vessel reflects New Delhi’s continued commitment to enhancing the maritime security capabilities of Seychelles. In a post on X, he described the initiative as part of a broader series of capacity-building efforts aimed at supporting the island nation’s security priorities.

Beyond the patrol vessel, India also gifted six ambulances, 10 utility vehicles and five laser radial boats to Seychelles, further strengthening cooperation in healthcare, emergency response and maritime operations.

Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Seychelles President Patrick Herminie and participate as the Guest of Honour at the country’s National Day golden jubilee celebrations. The visit is expected to deepen strategic, economic and developmental cooperation between the two countries while reaffirming India’s vision of a secure and stable Indian Ocean region.
