Mumbai/Ahmedabad: In a significant capacity expansion on a high-demand corridor, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Vande Bharat Express will now operate with a permanent 20-coach formation on a daily basis, replacing the earlier 16-coach configuration.
Railway officials said the decision follows sustained high occupancy and positive feedback during the trial phase when additional coaches were temporarily introduced. The upgrade is aimed at easing passenger load and improving availability on one of western India’s busiest business routes.

Higher Capacity, Same Premium Experience
The additional coaches—comprising a mix of AC Chair Car and Executive Class—will substantially enhance the train’s seating capacity while retaining its premium service features. The train operates between Mumbai Central railway station and Ahmedabad Junction railway station, catering to both business and leisure travellers.
Upgrade After Successful Trial
According to the Western Railway, the 20-coach configuration was initially introduced on an experimental basis. With consistently strong demand and operational feasibility confirmed, the enhancement has now been made permanent for Train Nos. 22961/22962.
Demand-Driven Move
The Mumbai–Ahmedabad sector remains one of the most heavily travelled intercity routes in the country, driven by strong economic, industrial, and tourism linkages. Officials noted that the capacity augmentation is part of a broader strategy to match infrastructure with rising passenger demand.
Part of Railways’ Modernisation Push
The move also aligns with Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to scale up semi-high-speed services under the Vande Bharat programme. Known for faster turnaround, modern amenities, and improved efficiency, Vande Bharat trains are increasingly being deployed and upgraded across key routes.
With the permanent shift to a 20-coach rake, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Vande Bharat is expected to offer better seat availability and a smoother travel experience on this critical corridor.
