Kolkata: The National Institute for the Locomotor Disabilities (NILD), Kolkata, marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) on December 2nd and 3rd, 2024, with a series of events aimed at raising awareness and celebrating the abilities of PwDs. The two-day celebration included a variety of competitions such as debates, poster making, slogan writing, quizzes, essays, and sit-and-draw contests. A street play and a fete were also organized, alongside a Mega Sports event.
An awareness rally, featuring more than 1,500 PwDs, students, and staff, was held as part of the celebrations. Additionally, a cricket match was arranged for locomotor and visually impaired players from Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, showcasing their skills and promoting inclusivity.
The event was inaugurated virtually by Sri Rajeev Sharma, Joint Secretary of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. Dr. Lalit Narayan, Director of NILD Kolkata, officially opened the program, and Dr. Ameed Equebal, Assistant Director (Training), delivered the keynote address.
A panel discussion on empowering PwDs featured notable speakers, including Dr. Shantanu Sen, State Secretary of Bengal IMA, Dr. Sujoy Chakraborty, Chairperson of the Howrah Municipality Corporation, and Dr. Subhash Chakraborty, Secretary of IMA Dumdum.
Prof. (Dr.) Ramji Singh, Director of AIIMS Kalyani, attended as the Chief Guest. The event concluded with a cultural performance by PwDs and students, followed by an award ceremony where the Director, NILD, honored the winners of various competitions.
National Award-winning PwDs, including Mr. Korok Biswas and Mr. Rupanja Sen, were also felicitated for their exceptional achievements. The program ended with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Sougato Banerjee, Deputy Director (Admin.), acknowledging the participants and guests for their support and contributions.
