PM Narendra Modi Mourns Death of Iranian President

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his foreign minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, following a helicopter crash in East Azerbaijan on Sunday.

In a heartfelt message posted on X, Modi stated, “Deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic demise of Dr. Seyed Ebrahim Raisi, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. His contribution to strengthening India-Iran bilateral relationship will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his family and the people of Iran. India stands with Iran in this time of sorrow.”

The fatal crash, which occurred in a dense forest area, claimed the lives of all passengers aboard, according to a report by the Mehr news agency on Monday morning. Head of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS), Pirhossein Kolivand, confirmed the crash site had been located, but there were no signs of survivors. Seventy-three rescue teams are currently involved in the search and rescue operation.

Prior to the accident, President Raisi had inaugurated the Qiz Qalasi and Khodaafarin dams alongside Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev earlier on Sunday.

The loss of President Raisi marks a significant moment of grief for Iran, with condolences pouring in from around the world.
