SAIL Opens First Overseas Office in Dubai, Eyes Global Expansion and Stronger UAE Ties

Dubai/New Delhi – In a landmark move to strengthen its global footprint, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) inaugurated its first international representative office in Dubai on July 2, 2025. The opening marks a key step in the state-run steel giant’s strategy to tap into emerging markets and enhance its role in the global steel trade.

The Dubai office was formally inaugurated by Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries, Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy, in the presence of India’s Consul General to Dubai, Satish Kumar Sivan, SAIL Chairman Amarendu Prakash, NMDC CMD Amitav Mukherjee, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Steel V.K. Tripathi, and senior officials from SAIL, NMDC, MECON, and the Ministry.

With an annual crude steel production capacity of over 20 million tonnes, SAIL becomes the third Indian public sector steel company to establish operations in Dubai, joining NMDC and MECON—both of which also launched their offices in the emirate earlier this week.

According to the Ministry of Steel, this new hub will serve as a strategic centre for boosting SAIL’s exports, building critical industry linkages, and enhancing India-UAE trade relations. Given Dubai’s reputation as the gateway to the MENA region and its business-friendly environment, the office offers a launchpad for deeper market penetration and investment.

The move aligns with the Government of India’s vision to promote the global presence of Indian steel players and realize the national steel production target of 300 million tonnes by 2030. SAIL also aims to expand its capacity to 35 MTPA, backed by growing demand and increased international engagement.

SAIL currently procures 2.5 million tonnes of limestone annually from UAE-based Stevin Rock LLC, a volume expected to grow with its future expansion plans. The company’s Dubai presence is expected to streamline such international operations and open up new sourcing and trading opportunities across the region.

Describing the development as a milestone in SAIL’s transformation into a globally competitive steelmaker, Minister Kumaraswamy highlighted that such overseas offices will play a crucial role in achieving Atmanirbhar Bharat’s global ambitions in the steel sector.
