Underwater Drones Deployed for Enhanced Security at Maha Kumbh

Prayagraj: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, underwater drones will be deployed to enhance the safety and security of pilgrims at the upcoming Kumbh Mela, a key spiritual event in India.

The Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government has rolled out an extensive security plan to manage potential emergencies and ensure the safe conduct of the Mahakumbh Mela, the largest spiritual gathering in Sanatan Dharma.

Set to begin on January 13, 2025, in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, the Mahakumbh Mela is expected to draw a record-breaking crowd of over 450 million attendees. To maintain order and protect the massive influx of pilgrims, the state has introduced underwater drones for the first time at the event. These drones will complement the already robust air and land surveillance systems in place.

The advanced underwater drones, capable of reaching depths of up to 100 meters, will provide round-the-clock surveillance and monitor activities beneath the surface of the Kumbh site. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, they will transmit real-time data to the Integrated Command and Control Center (I-CCC), allowing authorities to respond swiftly to any potential threats.

Dr. Rajeev Narayan Mishra, Police IG of the Eastern Zone in Prayagraj, who recently launched the drones, emphasized their critical role. “These drones are essential for monitoring underwater activities and providing accurate, real-time information to facilitate rapid responses to any emerging threats,” he stated.

In addition to the drones, a comprehensive security operation will be executed through coordinated efforts from the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). To bolster safety further, around 700 boats, manned by personnel from these forces, will patrol the waters 24/7. Remote-controlled life buoys will also be strategically deployed to assist in the rapid evacuation of individuals in distress.

With over 45 crore expected attendees, these extensive measures highlight the Uttar Pradesh government’s commitment to ensuring a safe and peaceful Maha Kumbh Mela, both for domestic and international visitors.
