‘Will take appropriate steps at right time’: Mallikarjun Kharge says after INDIA meet

# I.N.D.I.A. Decides Not to Form Government, Will Play Role of Opposition

New Delhi: Amidst claims by Congress chairman Mallikarjun Kharge that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP are “subverting the will of the people,” the INDIA alliance has pledged to remain in opposition.

Despite this stance, Kharge assured that the alliance is committed to resisting fascism and will act decisively when necessary to fulfill the public’s aspiration to be free from BJP rule.

The opposition had initially attempted to persuade Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Telugu Desam Party chairman and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister-elect Chandrababu Naidu to support the bloc, which secured 232 out of 543 Lok Sabha seats, with Congress contributing 99 seats.

However, their hopes for a significant realignment were dashed when both Kumar and Naidu formally extended their support to the NDA.

Sources revealed on Wednesday that the INDIA alliance might still reach out to former allies Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu in a bid to form a central government. Notably, Naidu has previously been in opposition, and Kumar has a history of political flip-flopping.

INDIA supporter Uddhav Thackeray was the first to bring up the matter, but Kharge confirmed that they will engage with potential allies. “The INDIA alliance welcomes all parties that share its fundamental commitment to the values enshrined in the Preamble to our Constitution and to its many provisions for economic, social, and political justice,” Kharge stated, extending an open invitation for future collaborations.

With opposition sentiments at a decade-high, there have been calls for Narendra Modi’s resignation, asserting that the Lok Sabha election results indicate the public’s desire for his departure.

Notably, Modi’s BJP won 240 seats, falling 32 short of the 272-seat majority, a significant decline from their 282 seats in 2014 and 303 in 2019. The BJP is now relying on the 53 seats secured by the NDA to form the government.
