Dhanbad: Aiming to build up good reading habits among the people students of IIT ISM, Dhanbad started a Book Club which has a large number of unique collections of Books.
The Book Club was started functioning at the student’s activity centre Room No. 104 on Friday, while registrations and book issue processes started on Saturday, informed Sankalp a student of Mechanical Engineering.
Reading is important because it develops the mind, he said. Our mind is a muscle and it needs exercise. Understanding the written word is one way the mind grows in its ability. Teaching young children to read helps them develop the language skills it also helps them learn to listen, said Sankalp.
Everybody wants to talk, but few can really listen. Lack of listening skills can result in major misunderstandings which can lead to job loss, marriage breakup, and other disasters – small and great. Reading helps everyone focus on what someone else is communicating, said Arijit another student.
By reading, you are exposed to so many wonderful things, said Ashish another student of ISM. “Reading helps your imagination when it comes to creating and thinking. By reading, you are painting those pictures of the story in your mind. Books can take you anywhere you want to go,” he added. Reading is a vital skill in finding a good job, many well-paying jobs require reading as a part of job performance, said Ashish. There are reports and memos which must be read and responded to. Poor reading skills increase the amount of time it takes to absorb and react in the workplace. A person is limited in what they can accomplish without good reading and comprehension skills, he said.
Refreshments of any kind are not allowed in the Book Club.
We have made some rules which must for its members, he said. Laptops, bags and any coursework materials are not allowed inside the book room. Books can be issued to registered borrowers. However, the borrower must present the institution ID card at the time of borrowing, failing which the book will not be issued.
A book shall be issued for a maximum of 2 weeks to a person, with the option of subsequent re-issues. If the book is not returned after the allotted period, Fine of Rs 10 for the first week and Rs 2 per day after the first week will be charged, he said. All the books issued must be returned before the end of the semester under any circumstances. If a member loses or damages a book beyond repair, he/she will either have to replace the book or pay 1.5 times the cost of the book, as calculated by the team, he informed.
