DRDO successfully tests Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo system

Odisha: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully conducted a flight test of the Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) system off the coast of Odisha.

The test took place at around 0830 hrs on May 01, 2024, from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island.

SMART is a state-of-the-art missile-based lightweight torpedo delivery system developed by DRDO to enhance the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capability. It is designed to operate far beyond the range of conventional lightweight torpedoes.

The canister-based missile system features advanced sub-systems, including a two-stage solid propulsion system, electromechanical actuator system, and precision inertial navigation system. It is equipped with an advanced lightweight torpedo as payload and a parachute-based release system.

During the test, the missile was launched from a ground mobile launcher, validating several state-of-the-art mechanisms such as symmetric separation, ejection, and velocity control.

Rajnath Singh, the Defence Minister, congratulated DRDO and its industry partners on the successful test, stating that the development of SMART will strengthen the Indian Navy.

Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, praised the synergistic efforts of the SMART team and urged them to maintain their commitment to excellence.
