Gaya: The Government Railway Police (GRP) has arrested a suspect involved in a series of train robberies on the East Central Railway. On Tuesday, the GRP Gaya team apprehended Dinanath Saw, a member of a drug smuggling gang accused of robbing passengers by drugging them. The arrest was confirmed by SRP Amritendu Shekhar Thakur.
Dinanath Saw, son of the late Raghunath Saw and a resident of Sabalpur under Sonpur police station in Bihar’s Saran district, was identified through CCTV footage, which helped pinpoint his involvement in drugging and robbing passengers, according to SRP Thakur.
GRP Circle Inspector Sushil Kumar Thakur reported that stolen items recovered from Saw include an Aadhar card, a large bag, a PAN card, a wristwatch, 60 tablets wrapped in paper, intoxicant powder, Rs 700, a bank Paytm card, and other items. “The suspect was identified and arrested based on CCTV evidence that tracked his activities,” Inspector Thakur added.
Officer-in-Charge Rajesh Kumar Singh of GRP Gaya explained that the incident came to light on August 24, 2024. Passenger Mohammad Sane Alam, from Bundelkhand Thana District Nawada, was targeted at Gaya railway station after disembarking from the 12322 Mumbai Howrah Mail. Saw, posing as a fellow traveler, offered Alam two bottles of lassi laced with intoxicants. After Alam was incapacitated, Saw stole his belongings and fled.
Upon receiving the report, GRP personnel treated Alam in the hospital and registered an FIR. Following SRP directives, a GRP team was formed, leading to Saw’s arrest.
During interrogation, Saw admitted to befriending passengers on trains and platforms, gaining their trust, and then drugging their food and drinks to facilitate thefts.EOM.
