Riyadh: Three people were killed and 36 others injured in attacks targeting two Saudi Arabian airports, including the kingdom’s main international airport in Riyadh, in a sharp escalation of Houthi attacks amid renewed fighting in Yemen.

The attacks targeted Abha International Airport in southwestern Saudi Arabia and King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, according to Saudi authorities.

Two foreign nationals — a Moroccan woman and an Algerian woman — were killed in the attack on Abha airport, while a Sudanese national was killed in the strike on King Khalid International Airport.

The attack on Abha left 28 people injured, while eight others were wounded in the Riyadh attack. The casualties included Saudi citizens. The strikes also caused damage to airport infrastructure.

The Iran-aligned Houthi movement claimed responsibility for a series of attacks against Saudi targets, saying it had launched missiles and drones. The group has intensified its cross-border attacks as fighting between Houthi forces and Saudi-backed Yemeni forces has escalated.

Saudi authorities said air-defence systems intercepted incoming projectiles, including a ballistic missile north of Riyadh. The Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognised government also said it had destroyed a Houthi missile-launch platform in Sanaa.

The latest attacks have raised fresh concerns over the safety of civilian aviation and regional air travel. The Houthis have warned international airlines against using Saudi airspace, with exceptions reportedly made for routes serving the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

The renewed violence comes amid intensified military operations in Yemen, where Saudi-backed forces have stepped up their campaign against Houthi-held areas. The escalation has further complicated efforts to restore stability after years of conflict.

India condemns attacks

India has condemned the attacks over the past few days targeting Abha International Airport and King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, which have resulted in civilian deaths and injuries.

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said that the targeting of civilian infrastructure is completely unacceptable. The Ministry said that India expresses its deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their loved ones.

India also expressed solidarity with and stands with the people and government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
