Washington/Paris: US President Donald Trump has triggered a fresh political controversy after claiming that Islam is seeking to “take over” France, while linking the country’s ongoing unrest to what he called “out of control” mass migration.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the developments in France were “nothing less than out of control mass migration” and alleged that the issue was not merely about schools but about “Islam wanting to take over a once great Country.”

Trump made the remarks as France witnessed large-scale protests involving students, teachers and their supporters. The demonstrations have largely focused on education-related issues, including school conditions, staffing shortages and funding, although tensions have escalated in several areas.

The US president did not provide evidence to substantiate his claim that the protests were part of an effort by Islam to take control of France.

The comments have added an international dimension to France’s domestic political debate over immigration, integration and the role of Islam in French society. Immigration has remained one of the most contentious political issues in France, with the country witnessing growing debates over national identity, secularism and migration policy.

French officials have sought to counter what they regard as misleading narratives about the protests, stressing that the demonstrations are primarily linked to domestic grievances.

Trump has repeatedly made immigration a central theme of his political messaging and has frequently criticised European countries over their migration policies. His latest comments are likely to further fuel debate over immigration and Islam on both sides of the Atlantic.
