Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sworn in as 39th president of Brazil

JNS: Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (77) has been sworn in as the 39th president of Brazil following the 2022 Brazilian general election.

After a hiatus during which he was incarcerated for more than a year and a half on corruption convictions that were later overturned, Lula won an unprecedented third presidential term in October by narrowly defeating Jair Bolsonaro to do so. This victory followed a hiatus during which Lula served as president of Brazil.

The former union leader served as the Workers Party (PT) president from 2003 to 2010, during which time the Brazilian economy benefited from a commodity boom. As a result, he was able to pull millions of Brazilians out of poverty during those years.
