Melbourne: Australian authorities have launched an investigation into an alleged online death threat targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi just days before his scheduled visit to Melbourne, where he is expected to participate in high-level bilateral engagements and a major Indian diaspora event.
According to Australian media reports, the alleged threat surfaced in the comments section of a Facebook post promoting the “Melbourne Meets Modi” community programme, scheduled to be held at Marvel Stadium on July 9. The post reportedly originated from an account using the translated name “Abu Mustafa” and contained a threatening message directed at the Indian Prime Minister.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) has taken up the matter and is examining the authenticity and origin of the post. Reports indicate that investigators have identified an IP address linked to the social media account and are assessing whether the message constitutes a criminal offence under Australian law. However, the AFP has not issued an official public statement or confirmed any arrests, citing the ongoing investigation.
The alleged threat has emerged just days before Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Australia, where he is expected to hold bilateral talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese during the Australia-India Annual Leaders’ Summit. Modi is also scheduled to attend the “Melbourne Meets Modi” event, which is expected to draw thousands of members of the Indian-Australian community.
Australian security agencies are treating the matter with utmost seriousness. Under established security protocols, threats against visiting heads of government trigger coordinated responses involving the Australian Federal Police, state police forces and specialist protective security units. Authorities are expected to maintain heightened security throughout the Prime Minister’s visit.
Despite the ongoing investigation, there has been no indication from Australian authorities that Prime Minister Modi’s itinerary will be altered. Preparations for his official engagements and public events are continuing as planned, with enhanced security measures likely to be in place.
The investigation remains active as authorities continue to examine the source, intent and legal implications of the online post. No charges have been announced so far.
