Mizoram: The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) government is all set to be officially sworn in at the Raj Bhavan in Mizoram’s capital, Aizawl, on Friday, December 8, 2023. This significant political transition comes after Chief Minister-designate Lalduhoma and his team secured a clear electoral mandate, marking a departure from the traditional political landscape of the state.
Chief Minister-designate Lalduhoma has confirmed that the inauguration ceremony will commence promptly at 11:00 AM, as per reliable sources. The State Governor, Hari Babu Kambhampati, will preside over the ceremony and administer the oath of office to Chief Minister Lalduhoma and his appointed ministers.
Preparations for this momentous event have been underway, with a high-level meeting convened on Tuesday, chaired by State Chief Secretary Renu Sharma, to discuss and finalize all necessary arrangements for the swearing-in ceremony. Prior to the official ceremony, all 27 elected ZPM legislators will gather in Aizawl at 8:00 PM on Tuesday to formally elect Lalduhoma as the leader of the ZPM legislature party. Lalduhoma is scheduled to meet with Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati at the Raj Bhavan in Aizawl on Wednesday to officially stake his claim to form the next government, solidifying the democratic transition of power in Mizoram.
The outgoing Chief Minister, Zoramthanga, tendered his resignation to the Governor on Monday after it became apparent that the electoral mandate favoured the Zoram People’s Conference (ZPM) over his party. This move marked the end of his tenure and the beginning of a new chapter in Mizoram’s political landscape.
Lalduhoma’s appointment as Chief Minister represents a historic milestone, as he becomes the first Chief Minister of Mizoram who has not belonged to either the Congress or the Mizo National Front (MNF) since the state’s establishment in 1987. In parallel developments, the ten legislators of the Mizo National Front (MNF) party convened a meeting on Tuesday. They elected former School Education Minister Lalchhandama Ralte as the leader of the MNF legislature party. Although the MNF faced defeat in the election for the 40-member state legislature by the Zoram People’s Conference (ZPM), it remains the second-largest party in the state, positioning itself as a formidable opposition force in the Mizoram political landscape.
